Who It’s For

This program is designed for university-aged students who are interested in working professionally with animals.

All undergraduate, pre-veterinary and veterinary students are welcome. Individuals of any nationality may apply. All lessons are in English. University credit is not offered with this internship.

Meet Our Instructors

Zoo Veterinarian

Ryan Colburn, DVM

Dr. Colburn is the sole Veterinarian for the John Ball Zoo in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He is passionate about emergency medicine and supporting conservation through his work at the Zoo. He earned his DVM at Michigan State University and completed rotations at the Detroit Zoo as well as the Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife (CROW) in Sanibel Island, Florida. Dr. Colburn has yet to identify a true "favorite" among his patients but he does have a special place in his heart for felids.

Zoo and Wildlife Veterinarian

Diana Boon, DVM

Dr. Boon is a zoo and wildlife veterinarian with nearly 20 years of experience. She has worked at Fossil Rim Wildlife Center, the Denver Zoo, and as a full time zoo relief professional, working with 10 other zoos around the USA. She has been an active teacher and mentor in the Mongolian Argalia sheep conservation project and the California Condor recovery program. She has a soft spot for flamingos after helping with a hand rearing and recovery project in South Africa. She earned her DVM from NC State University College of Veterinary Medicine and completed a large animal medicine & surgery internship at Texas A&M University.
